Australia, 1927 Proof Canberra Florin -

Widely regarded as the most beautiful Australian coin, the 1927 Canberra florin holds a special place in numismatic history as Australia’s first commemorative coin. It remains highly sought after today—with mint state examples fetching hundreds, and proofs commanding thousands of dollars. The coin photographed above is a superb proof specimen. Struck from specially polished dies and issued in very limited numbers to mark the opening of Parliament House, it was acquired from a seasoned Melbourne collector last year. We submitted it to PCGS, where it received a grade of PR66—a strong result that places it above the average for the type. As of May 2025, only four coins have been graded finer by PCGS. Visually, it stuns: It’s lustre is brilliant, details razor-sharp, and surfaces are untouched and free from fingerprints or handling. For collectors of significant Australian coinage, or anyone drawn to rare pieces of Australiana, this is a standout acquisition.

Grades PCGS PR66.
