1893 Melbourne Veiled Head Sovereign

The 1893-M Veiled head (or Old head) sovereign is one of the underappreciated rarities in the Veiled head series. Although not as scarce as the 1899-P, it’s certainly harder to track down in Mint State than the 1893-S or 1896-S sovereigns, both of which have higher catalogue values. The coin photographed above is graded PCGS MS62 and is the equal-second finest graded by PCGS (July 2013). The finest example is only graded MS62+, so MS62 isn’t too far off the mark from what is currently the “top pop” coin. Scarce this nice.
