1874 Melbourne St George Reverse Sovereign

S-3857. Early Young Head St George reverse sovereigns are scarce in PCGS MS62 or better. The 1874-M St George reverse is no exception. In fact, this is the first example that I have had in stock graded PCGS MS62 or better since October 2011, and one of the nicest I’ve seen on the broader market to boot. Of PCGS-certified coins, it is bettered by four examples, three in PCGS MS63 and another in MS64 (7/18). If you’re looking for a collectable example of an early Young Head St George reverse sovereign, but don’t want to outlay $10,000+ for an 1871-S or 1872-M in the same grade, this is your coin.
