Australia, 1887 Sydney Jubilee Head Sovereign - Grades PCGS MS64.
S-3868A, with small, spread JEB. A “fresh” coin is one that is original, unwashed, uncleaned, and in the same condition as it was when minted. The coin photographed above is as fresh as I’ve seen them, with undulating cartwheeling lustre, clean fields, and a detailed and definite strike. Being the first sovereign of the new Jubilee design, it would not be far-fetched to say that this coin was put aside almost as soon as it was found in circulation, and has been out of circulation ever since. Overall, it is one of the best 1887-S Jubilee head sovereigns we’ve handled, and is the equal-third finest example graded by PCGS (8/22). Sourced from a generalist auction house in suburban Sydney.
