Australia, 1921 Melbourne Sovereign - Grades PCGS MS63.
The story is well known: After the demand for physical gold coinage fell dramatically in the 1920s, gold sovereigns were melted en masse, creating some of Australia’s rarest and most desirable numismatic rarities. Of all those rarities, the 1921 sovereign from Melbourne is one of the hardest to obtain in any grade: PCGS has graded just 13 coins (10/24). The present coin, photographed above, is one of the better examples we’ve handled in the last decade, with a strong strike, undulant lustre, and overall great visual eye appeal. If you’re a serious collector seeking to add an important numismatic rarity to your sovereign collection, this is an essential coin.
