1870 Sydney Mint Sovereign

1870 Sydney Mint sovereigns graded PCGS MS62 or better have been extremely difficult to source. Earlier this year, I sold an example graded PCGS MS63+ to a Sydney collector, but prior to that, I hadn’t owned an 1870 Sydney Mint sovereign in PCGS MS62 or better for about five years. The coin on offer here, photographed above, is one of the nicest Sydney Mints I’ve seen. The coin’s strike is bold, its lustre is full, and the fields, particularly on the obverse, are free from distracting bagging or marks. In higher grades, the 1870 is tougher than the 1866, and while I currently have three 1866 Sydney Mint sovereigns in MS62 or better for sale, this 1870 is the only example I have in MS62. Very scarce this nice, and an essential coin for a Sydney Mint date set.
